✨ 8 Free Things You Can Ask Your Cabin Steward For

( and yes…most people never do )

🧊 Ice Bucket Refilled AnytimeSmall tweak: Just ask for regular refills
→ Perfect for drinks in your cabin without trekking to the bar
🛏 Extra Pillows or BlanketsSmall tweak: Ask on day one
→ Makes your cabin way more comfortable (especially if you’re picky about sleep)
🧼 Extra TowelsSmall tweak: Request a couple more than standard
→ So helpful after the pool, excursions, or quick showers
🔌 Extension Cord (Non-Surge)Small tweak: Ask early—they’re limited ⭐️→ Cruise cabins never have enough outlets
This was the one that made the biggest difference for me… I didn’t realise how annoying the lack of outlets would be until I was there. I just asked my cabin steward for an extension cord and it completely sorted it.
🧊 Mini Fridge Emptied (if stocked)Small tweak: Ask them to clear it
→ Gives you space for your own drinks/snacks
🧹 Extra Cabin Cleaning / Turn Down TimingSmall tweak: Ask for a time that suits you
→ No more awkward “they’re cleaning when I need the room” moments
☕ Extra Coffee / Tea SuppliesSmall tweak: Ask for more than the standard
→ Saves you leaving the room first thing in the morning
🍽 Plates, Cutlery or GlassesSmall tweak: Ask if you’re bringing food back to the cabin
→ Makes casual meals/snacks way easier

Honestly, once I realised you can just ask for these, it made the whole experience feel so much easier. Your cabin steward is there to help—you just have to know what’s worth asking for 😉🛳️ Not every cruise line offers everything, but:
👉 90% of these are standard requests
👉 The key message = you’re allowed to ask

Make it even better✨

A few things I bring to make my cabin feel even better……

🛏️ Travel Pillow Spray
Makes any cabin feel like a hotel spa

🧳 Packing Cubes
So you’re not living out of chaos all week

🔌 Cruise Approved Power Strip
Because outlets are… limited 😅

⭐️ You can ask for one, but I’ve seen people miss out—so I just pack a small one now and don’t think about it.

Airport Outfits That Slow You Down

I didn’t think my outfit mattered that much for the airport… until I ended up holding up the line 😅
It’s always the small things — shoes, layers, accessories — that seem fine at home but make everything slower (and more stressful) once you get to security.
These are the outfit mistakes I now avoid every time… and what you can wear instead 👇

What Slows You Down

Lace-up shoes 😬
Too many layers 🧥
Metal accessories ⛓️
Tight jeans 👖

What Cruise Cabins Are REALLY Like
(Before You Book) 🚢

Most first-time cruisers spend hours comparing itineraries… but almost no time thinking about the cabin itself. Then reality hits 😅
Some travelers are surprised by how compact cruise cabins can feel. Others instantly fall in love with the clever storage, cozy atmosphere, and incredible views from their balcony. The truth is — your cabin can completely shape your cruise experience.
Before you book, it helps to know what cruise cabins are really like beyond the glossy brochure photos. From tiny bathrooms and hidden storage tricks to balcony expectations and noise surprises, these are the things experienced cruisers wish they’d known sooner.

🚪 They’re Usually Smaller Than You Expect
Even luxury cruise cabins can feel compact compared to hotel rooms. Cruise ships are designed to maximize space efficiently, so every inch matters.
The good news? Most cabins are surprisingly clever with storage once you settle in.
🧳 Storage Is Smarter Than It Looks
Experienced cruisers quickly learn there’s hidden storage everywhere:
under the bed
behind mirrors
inside benches
narrow wardrobes
bathroom shelves
Unpacking properly makes the room feel twice as big.
🚿 Bathrooms Can Feel Tiny
This is one of the biggest surprises for first-time cruisers 😅
Cruise bathrooms are functional rather than luxurious on many ships. Showers can feel compact, counter space is limited, and overpacking toiletries quickly becomes a problem.
A hanging toiletry organizer helps more than people realize.

🌅 Balcony Cabins Change the Entire Experience
Many travelers say once they try a balcony cabin, they never want to go back.
Morning coffee with ocean views, quiet sunsets, fresh air, and peaceful private space become part of the vacation itself — not just the room.
But balconies are usually worth booking strategically rather than automatically.
🔊 Location Matters MORE Than Cabin Type
A beautiful cabin underneath the pool deck can become surprisingly noisy.
Before booking, smart cruisers always check:
nearby elevators
restaurants above
theater locations
nightclub decks
crew access areas
A quieter inside cabin can sometimes feel far more luxurious than a noisy balcony.
❄️ Cabins Can Feel Colder Than Expected
Cruise ship air conditioning is often stronger than travelers expect.
Many experienced cruisers pack:
a lightweight cardigan
soft lounge layers
comfortable socks
a thin sleep shirt
Especially for evenings or overnight sailing.

⚡ There May Not Be Enough Plug Sockets
This catches travelers out constantly.
Phones, watches, power banks, hair tools, tablets, cameras… suddenly everyone needs charging space at once.
Many cruise cabins still have surprisingly limited outlets.

🚢 Motion Feels Different Depending on Cabin Location
Mid-ship cabins on lower decks often feel smoother in rougher seas.
Forward cabins may experience more noticeable movement, especially during overnight sailing or windy weather.
For nervous cruisers, cabin position can matter more than ship size.
☕ Your Cabin Becomes Your Quiet Escape
Cruise ships can feel busy at times, especially on sea days.
That’s why many experienced cruisers appreciate having a calm, comfortable cabin to retreat to between excursions, meals, and entertainment.
The “right” cabin isn’t always the most expensive one — it’s the one that matches your travel style.

Final Thoughts ✨
Cruise cabins rarely feel exactly like the brochure photos… but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Once you understand the layout, storage tricks, and little cruise quirks, most cabins start feeling surprisingly cozy and comfortable.
And honestly? Many travelers end up spending far less time in their cabin than they expected — because they’re too busy enjoying the ship, the views, and the experience itself 🚢

Okay Wait… Why Do Experienced Travelers ALWAYS Do This Before Leaving Home?

I used to think experienced travelers were simply better at packing than everyone else. You know the type.
They arrive at the airport looking calm and relaxed while everyone else is frantically searching for passports, charging cables, or boarding passes.
Then I noticed something.
The most organized travelers don’t rely on memory. They rely on routines.

Over time, many seasoned travelers develop a simple pre-trip routine that helps them avoid stress, reduce mistakes, and start every journey feeling prepared.

The good news?
Most of these habits take less than ten minutes.

1. They Check Their Travel DocumentsBefore leaving home, experienced travelers always make sure they have:✔ Passport✔ Boarding passes
✔ Travel insurance details
✔ Hotel confirmations
✔ Emergency contact information
A quick document check can prevent a lot of unnecessary stress later.

2. They Review Their Flight Details One Last TimeFlight times, departure gates, terminals, and schedules can change.A quick look at the airline app before leaving home helps avoid surprises and gives peace of mind before heading to the airport.

3. They Charge Their DevicesMost experienced travelers leave home with:✔ A fully charged phone✔ A charged power bank✔ Charging cables packed and readyYour phone is often your boarding pass, map, travel guide, camera, and communication tool all in one.A dead battery can quickly become a problem.

4. They Check The WeatherWeather affects more than clothing choices.
Checking the forecast helps travelers prepare for:
✔ Delays✔ Rain✔ Extreme heat
✔️Cold weather✔ Destination conditions
Just a quick glance can help you pack more effectively and travel more comfortably.

5. They Do A Final Home CheckMany travelers use a simple mental checklist before locking the door.
Did I turn off appliances?
Have I locked all windows?
Is the heating or air conditioning set correctly?
Do I have my wallet, passport, phone, and keys?
This simple habit can prevent that awful feeling of uncertainty halfway to the airport.6. They Keep Essential Items Easy To ReachExperienced travelers don’t bury important items at the bottom of a suitcase.
Before leaving home, they make sure these items are easy to access:
✔ Passport✔ Boarding pass
✔ Wallet✔ Phone✔ Medication
✔ Glasses✔ Travel documents
Small adjustments can make airport check-in and security much smoother.

7. They Give Themselves A Time BufferOne of the biggest differences between stressed travelers and relaxed travelers is timing.
Experienced travelers rarely leave at the last possible minute.
They build extra time into their plans because traffic, queues, and unexpected delays happen.
A small buffer can make a huge difference to how your travel day feels. The Real SecretThe truth is that experienced travelers aren’t necessarily more organized than everyone else. They simply rely on systems instead of memory.A few simple checks before leaving home can reduce stress, prevent forgotten items, and help your trip start on the right foot. The next time you’re preparing for a vacation, cruise, or city break, try creating your own pre-trip routine. You may be surprised by how much calmer and easier your travel day becomes.

The Ultimate Guide to
Planning a Girls’ Trip
After 50

There is a unique kind of magic that happens when you travel with your closest friends. After decades of juggling careers, raising families, and managing endless responsibilities, a girls' trip is no longer just a "fun getaway"—it’s a vital way to reconnect, recharge, and celebrate the incredible women you’ve become.

But let’s be honest: we are past the age of roughing it.
We don't want cramped hotel rooms, chaotic 15-hour travel days, or heavy luggage. We want comfort, beautiful aesthetics, rich culture, and seamless logistics.
Here is your step-by-step blueprint to planning an unforgettable, zero-stress girls’ trip that everyone in your group will rave about for years to come.

Step 1: Establish the "Vibe & Value"
Agreement First

Before anyone books a single flight, have a quick casual chat (over wine or Zoom!) to get everyone on the same page. The secret to keeping friendships intact during travel is aligning on expectations early.

The Budget Talk: Establish a comfortable spending range for lodging and dining. It’s okay if some want to splurge on a spa day while others want to browse boutiques—just agree on the baseline hotel/villa cost.
The Pace of the Trip: Decide if this is a "Do-It-All" sightseeing trip or a "Do-Nothing" slow-paced retreat. A great rule of thumb is planning one main activity per day, leaving afternoons free for spontaneous exploring or resting.

Step 2: Choose "Ease-First" Destinations

The best destinations for a mature girls' trip offer a mix of walkability, safety, cultural richness, and comfortable transit. Here are three highly recommended ideas:

1. The Wine & Wellness Escape (Napa Valley, CA or Sedona, AZ)
Perfect for a 3-to-4-day domestic trip. Think luxury spa treatments, gentle hikes, art gallery strolls, and private wine tastings.
Why it works: Low travel fatigue, incredibly relaxing, and easy to navigate with a rental car or private driver.

2. The European River Cruise (The Danube or the Rhine)
The ultimate luxury for groups. You unpack once, and your boutique hotel floats from one historic fairytale town to the next.
Why it works: Zero daily planning required. If half the group wants to go on a guided castle tour and the other half wants to stay on board for a massage, everyone is happy.

3. The Seaside "Slow Travel" Villa (The Amalfi Coast or Mallorca, Spain)
Rent a beautiful private villa with a pool in a walkable coastal village.
Why it works: You get a central "home base" to cook, laugh, and sip coffee in your pajamas, with easy access to seaside lunch spots and local boutiques.

Step 3: Divide and Conquer
(Without the Stress)

Planning a group trip shouldn't fall on just one person's shoulders. Divide the light lifting so everyone feels invested, but no one feels exhausted:
The Accommodation Finder: Researches 2 or 3 beautiful, highly-rated hotels or villas.
The Culinary Curator: Reserves one or two special group dinners in advance (crucial for popular spots!).
The Logistics Queen: Coordinates airport transfers or rental cars so arriving is completely seamless.

Step 4: Pack Like a Pro
(Naturally!)

At this stage in life, heavy bags are our worst enemy. The goal is to look effortlessly chic while traveling with a single, lightweight carry-on.
The 5-4-3-2-1 Capsule Wardrobe: For a week-long trip, pack 5 tops, 4 bottoms (mix of pants and skirts), 3 pairs of shoes (one dressy, one casual, one high-quality walking shoe), 2 layering pieces (a chic trench or cardigan), and 1 hat/swimsuit.
Coordinate "Shared" Items: Don't waste suitcase space! Have one friend bring the travel steamer, another bring the high-end hair tools, and another pack a small first-aid kit with essentials.

At the end of the day, a getaway with your favorite people should feel like a vacation, not a second job to coordinate. By putting a few smart, simple packing and planning systems in place before you go, you can completely skip the group logistics headaches and focus entirely on what actually matters—making unforgettable memories together.

10 Things To Expect On
Cruise Boarding Day 🚢

Cruise boarding day can feel a little overwhelming, especially if you're not sure what happens once you arrive at the terminal. The good news? It's usually much more straightforward than it first appears.Whether you're a first-time cruiser or simply haven't been on a ship for a while, knowing what to expect can make those first few hours much more relaxed. Here are 10 things you can expect on cruise boarding day.

1. 🧳 Your luggage may be taken from you

When you arrive at the cruise terminal, larger pieces of luggage are often handed over to porters.Your bags will normally be delivered to your cabin later, so don't put anything you need during those first few hours into your checked luggage.Keep your passport, medications, phone, valuables, travel documents and anything else you'll need immediately in your hand luggage. And don't panic if your suitcase doesn't appear outside your cabin straight away. That's completely normal.

2. 📄 You'll go through check-in

You'll need to complete the cruise line's check-in process before boarding. This normally involves checking your travel documents and cruise details. Depending on the cruise line and port, much of this may already have been completed online before you arrive.Having your documents easily accessible makes this part considerably easier.Tip: Take a screenshot of important boarding information on your phone in case your internet connection isn't great at the terminal.

3. 🔐 You'll go through security

Yes, cruise terminals have security too.The process can feel similar to airport security, although procedures vary between ports and cruise lines. You'll normally need to put bags or personal items through screening before proceeding towards the ship. It's another reason not to arrive carrying a mountain of unnecessary stuff. 😉

4. 📸 Your photo may be taken

Don't be surprised if someone takes your photograph during the boarding process.Cruise lines may use photographs as part of their identification and security procedures, and you may also be offered one of those traditional embarkation photographs. You don't have to look glamorous after travelling to the port.Although if you happen to be feeling photogenic, go for it. 😂

5. 🪪 Your cruise card or digital pass becomes important

Once you're on board, your cruise card or digital equivalent is something you'll want to keep handy.Depending on the cruise line, it can be used for things such as:- Accessing your cabin
- Making purchases on board
- Identifying you
- Getting on and off the ship in port
Think of it as your little passport to life on the ship.Don't lose it

6. 🛏️ Your cabin might not be ready immediately

This catches some first-time cruisers out.You may be allowed onto the ship before your cabin is ready. That's not a problem.Use the time to explore the ship, find somewhere comfortable to sit, have something to eat or grab your first holiday drink.Your cabin will normally become available once the crew has finished preparing it.And when it does? That's when the holiday really starts to feel real. 😃

7. 🍽️ Food is usually available

One of the nicest things about boarding a cruise ship is that you don't normally have to spend the afternoon wondering where you're going to find lunch.Depending on your cruise line and sailing, there will generally be food and refreshments available once you've boarded. It's worth checking the daily schedule or cruise-line app to see what's open. And don't feel that you have to rush to the buffet the second you step aboard. You've got time

8. 🚨 You'll have a mandatory safety briefing

Every passenger needs to know what to do in an emergency. You'll be given information about your muster station and the ship's emergency procedures. The exact format varies between cruise lines. Some parts may be completed digitally, while you'll still need to attend or report to your designated muster area as required. It might not be the most exciting part of your holiday...…but it's important.Once it's done, you can get back to enjoying the ship.

9. 🌊 There may be a few hours before the ship sails

Boarding doesn't necessarily mean you're about to sail away immediately. There can be a period between boarding, completing the necessary procedures and departure. This is actually one of my favourite parts of cruise day.Instead of thinking:"Why aren't we moving yet?"think:"We're already on holiday."Explore the ship. Find the quieter areas. Take a look at the pool deck. Have a coffee. Watch the port activity. There's no prize for being the first person to watch the wake appear behind the ship.

10. ❤️ The holiday starts before departure

This is perhaps the most important thing to remember.Boarding day doesn't need to be a frantic race to find your cabin, unpack everything and work out where every restaurant is.Give yourself permission to slow down.Have a drink.Explore.Sit somewhere with a view.Watch the ship come alive around you.And if you're travelling with someone, enjoy that first "We're actually here!" moment together. The ship hasn't even left the port yet—and you're already on holiday.

The Best Way To Start A Cruise

Cruise boarding day doesn't have to be complicated.Once you understand the basic process, it's really just a series of small steps: arrive, check in, go through security, board, complete your safety requirements, find something to eat and start enjoying the ship. And then, eventually...The lines disappear. The port starts getting smaller. The ship turns towards the open water. And that first sail-away begins. 🌊Now you're properly on holiday.

Would I Recommend a Vacation in Santa Fe?

Absolutely—but only if you’re looking for the right kind of vacation. If your perfect holiday is packed with theme parks, beaches or nightlife, Santa Fe probably isn’t for you. However, if you enjoy history, beautiful scenery, local culture, excellent food and wandering at your own pace, Santa Fe could become one of your favourite destinations in the USA.

Known as “The City Different,” Santa Fe blends Native American, Hispanic and Spanish influences to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in America. The city is famous for its distinctive adobe architecture, thriving arts scene and historic plaza, which has been the heart of the city for more than 400 years.

❤️ What I Love

The relaxed paceSanta Fe encourages you to slow down.Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, you’ll find yourself browsing galleries, enjoying long lunches, sitting in the Plaza with a coffee and simply taking in the atmosphere. The architectureAlmost every street feels unique. The warm adobe buildings, colourful doors, hanging chile ristras and mountain backdrop make Santa Fe one of the most photogenic cities in America.

The artEven if you’re not an art lover, it’s difficult not to appreciate the creativity here. You’ll discover galleries, public art, museums and local artists throughout the city, with attractions such as Museum Hill and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum drawing visitors from around the world. The foodSanta Fe has a wonderful food scene.Expect traditional New Mexican dishes featuring red and green chile, alongside excellent cafés, bakeries and fine dining.

The historyAs America’s oldest state capital, Santa Fe has centuries of fascinating history. The Plaza, Palace of the Governors, San Miguel Chapel and many other landmarks tell the story of Native American, Spanish and Mexican influences that shaped the city.

🤔 What to Know Before You Go

The altitudeSanta Fe sits at around 7,000 feet (2,100 metres) above sea level. Many visitors notice the thinner air for the first day or two, so drink plenty of water, take things slowly and avoid overdoing it on your first afternoon.WalkingThe historic centre is very walkable, but some streets are uneven and you’ll be doing more walking than you might expect.Comfortable shoes are definitely recommended.Evenings can be coolDespite the sunshine, temperatures often drop after sunset, especially outside the summer months.A light jacket is worth packing. It’s not a city of major attractionsSanta Fe is more about atmosphere than ticking off famous landmarks. If you enjoy discovering local culture and taking your time, you’ll probably love it.

🌵 Who It’s Perfect For

I’d particularly recommend Santa Fe for:* Couples looking for a relaxed getaway.
* Solo travellers who enjoy exploring at their own pace.
* Art and photography lovers.
* History enthusiasts.
* Food lovers.
* Mature travellers wanting something quieter than Las Vegas or Orlando.
* Anyone wanting to experience a completely different side of America.
Santa Fe is also frequently recommended by experienced travellers as an enjoyable destination for older visitors because of its cultural attractions, slower pace and welcoming atmosphere, although planning around the altitude and walking distances is worthwhile.

My Verdict⭐ Would I recommend a vacation in Santa Fe?

Yes.

Santa Fe isn’t about rushing from one attraction to another. It’s about slowing down, enjoying incredible food, discovering fascinating history, admiring beautiful art and soaking up an atmosphere that’s unlike anywhere else in the United States. If that sounds like your idea of a great vacation, I think Santa Fe deserves a place on your travel wish list.

Make Your Visit Even More Memorable

If you’re planning a trip to Santa Fe and would like to explore beyond simply wandering the streets, here are three experiences that stand out. We’ve used GetYourGuide ourselves and found it an easy way to discover and book activities before travelling.

🏛️ Discover Santa Fe’s Fascinating History

A guided walking tour is one of the best ways to learn about Santa Fe’s unique blend of Native American, Spanish and Mexican influences while exploring the historic heart of the city.

👻 Experience Santa Fe After Dark

🇪🇸 5 Things First-Time Visitors Get Wrong in Barcelona

Barcelona is one of Europe’s most exciting cities, famous for its incredible architecture, beautiful beaches and relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. However, a few simple mistakes can lead to long queues, unnecessary expense or an uncomfortable day of sightseeing. Here are five easy tips to help you enjoy Barcelona like a more experienced traveller.

1. Not Booking Popular Attractions in Advance

Barcelona’s biggest attractions, including La Sagrada Família and Park Güell, often sell out well in advance. Booking ahead can save you hours of waiting and guarantee entry.

2. Tipping Too Much

Unlike in some countries, large tips aren’t expected in Spain. If you’ve received excellent service, leaving a small tip is appreciated, but it’s entirely optional.

3. Buying Bottled Water

Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it at Barcelona’s public drinking fountains. It’s a simple way to save money while staying hydrated, especially during the warmer months.

4. Forgetting Church Dress Codes

If you plan to visit churches such as La Sagrada Família, remember to cover your shoulders and knees. Packing a lightweight scarf or shawl is an easy way to be prepared.

5. Underestimating the Summer Heat

Barcelona can become very hot in summer. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, use sunscreen and take regular breaks in the shade to make the most of your visit.

⭐ Make Even More of Your Barcelona Visit

Once you’ve avoided these common mistakes, why not discover even more of Barcelona? From skip-the-line Sagrada Família tours and Park Güell guided visits to food tours, flamenco shows and sunset sailing cruises, there are plenty of unforgettable experiences to enjoy.

🇮🇹 5 Things First-Time Visitors Get Wrong in Rome

Rome is one of the world’s most unforgettable destinations, but a few common mistakes can make your first visit more expensive, stressful or time-consuming than it needs to be. The good news is that they’re all easy to avoid with a little local knowledge. Here are five simple tips that will help you enjoy the Eternal City like a more experienced traveller.

1. Tipping Too Much

Unlike some countries, service is often already included in restaurant bills. A small tip for excellent service is appreciated, but large tips aren’t expected.

2. Buying Bottled Water

Save your money by filling up at Rome’s famous Nasone drinking fountains. The water is clean, cold and completely free.

3. Choosing the Wrong Gelato

Look for authentic gelaterias with natural-looking colours rather than brightly coloured displays. You’ll usually enjoy a much better-quality gelato.

4. Forgetting Church Dress Codes

Many of Rome’s beautiful churches, including St. Peter’s Basilica, require visitors to cover their shoulders and knees. Packing a lightweight scarf can be a real lifesaver.

5. Not Booking Popular Attractions in Advance

Rome’s biggest attractions can sell out days or even weeks ahead, especially during the busiest travel seasons. Booking in advance can save hours of queuing and help you make the most of your time in the city.
